A 15-strong group of Australasians – many courtesy of strong Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia seasons – descend on the Home of Golf this week for a favourite stop on the DP World Tour, the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
Each year, professionals from around the globe pair up with Hollywood actors, sporting stars, business moguls and musicians for the pro-am event which is played over three famed Scottish links.
While The Old Course at St. Andrews is the primary venue, competitors also play a round each at Carnoustie Golf Links and Kingsbarns Golf Links.
The leading 10 available players from within the top 30 of last season’s Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit received invites, with young guns Jordan Doull, Corey Lamb, James Conran and Phoenix Campbell all taking the next steps in their careers.
“This will be the biggest event I’ve played for sure,” Doull told GolfWA. “I’ve never been to Scotland, so it will definitely be a great experience. I get to play at St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns and that’ll be pretty special.
“Links golf suits me pretty well. You’ve got to hit the ball low and be able to control your flights, which I think I do all right.
“It’ll be a lot of fun and while I’ll be trying not to take it too seriously, I still want to perform well. That’s the main goal.”
They join the likes of Elvis Smylie and David Micheluzzi who have been plying their trade on the DP World Tour all season, Smylie with a PGA TOUR promotion in his sights.
The PGA TOUR also returns this week with Min Woo Lee amongst the Australians in action at the Sandersons Farms Championship, while five Australians are playing in the LOTTE Championship presented by Hoakalei as the LPGA Tour heads to Hawaii.
Closer to home, a whopping 18 men from Down Under are playing in the Jakarta International Championship, many of whom will be hoping to find some competitive form before the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia returns in Kalgoorlie next week.
